36 weeks pregnant? Should you start harvesting colostrum? Let's talk about it! Colostrum is your baby's very first milk, packed with antibodies and nutrients, and your body actually starts producing it during pregnancy! When can you start collecting it? Generally, from 36–37 weeks of pregnancy, provided your pregnancy is uncomplicated and your midwife or obstetrician has given you the go-ahead. In Ireland, it's recommended from 37 weeks pregnant. How do you collect it? By gently hand expressing it- see my other videos on this... What if nothing comes out? PLEASE don't panic! 🙌 Some women collect several millilitres, others only a few drops, and some get absolutely nothing! The amount of colostrum you express during pregnancy is NOT an indication of your future milk supply or your ability to breastfeed successfully. Do you HAVE to harvest colostrum? Absolutely NOT! It can be particularly useful in certain circumstances, such as when you have gestational diabetes or your baby may need additional feeding support after birth. But it's not something every pregnant woman needs to do. ⚠️ Always check with your maternity team before starting, particularly if you have a history of premature labour, bleeding or other pregnancy complications. Stop expressing if you experience contractions or bleeding and seek advice. Remember, breastfeeding isn't a competition, and you don't need a freezer full of colostrum to get off to a great start!❤️ Save this post for later and follow Nursing Mama for practical, evidence-based breastfeeding and bottle-feeding advice without the pressure! #nursingmama #IBCLC #lactationconsultant #breastfeeding #colostrum
