Most people think this melody is an old American folk song. It isn't. A homesick Czech composer, an ocean away from everything he loved, wrote it — and it may be the loneliest thing ever set for orchestra. In 1892, Antonín Dvořák left his beloved Bohemia to become director of a new conservatory in New York. He was already one of the most famous composers alive, but America wanted his help building its own musical voice. He threw himself into it — captivated by the spirituals his students sang and the folk songs of a vast, unfamiliar country. But beneath the fascination was a deep ache. He was already one of the most famous composers alive, but America wanted his help building its own musical voice. He threw himself into it — captivated by the spirituals his students sang and the folk songs of a vast, unfamiliar country. But beneath the fascination was a deep ache. Dvořák was profoundly homesick — for his children, his village, the Bohemian countryside he could see every time he closed his eyes. Out of that longing came the Ninth Symphony, "From the New World," and at its very heart, this Largo. The theme is carried by the cor anglais — the English horn, a darker, more plaintive cousin of the oboe. Decades later, a former pupil set the melody to words as "Goin' Home," and ever since, people have mistaken it for an ancient hymn. It isn't. It's the sound of one man missing home. A Largo is simply a slow, broad tempo — music given room to breathe. That space is the whole point: the melody moves like someone walking slowly toward something they can't quite reach. It turned out to be so universal that when Neil Armstrong flew to the Moon on Apollo 11, this was among the music he carried with him — a song about longing for home, played farther from home than anyone in history.
