Why did so many Jamaicans end up with European surnames?
There are several historical reasons.
1. Names associated with enslavers: Some enslaved people used or were recorded under the surnames of enslavers or plantation families. Those names could then pass down through generations. However, not everyone took the surname of the person who enslaved them.
