@horseshoeroundme: More than 35 years later, Gulf War veterans gathered on the National Mall to see their service honored. The National Desert Storm and Desert Shield Memorial was dedicated Saturday, Oct. 24, near the Lincoln Memorial at 23rd Street and Constitution Avenue NW. It honors those who served in the operations that led to the liberation of Kuwait in 1991. The hour-long ceremony included the U.S. Army Band and the first raising of the U.S. flag over the memorial. "The first thing that comes to my mind is pride," said Angela Burton of Texas. Marine veteran Dave Henderson added, "We're all family. We're all here together." The memorial features curving walls evoking desert dunes, a shaded grove with water, and the Unity Shield honoring the coalition. It is open 24/7.
