Surface – “Happy” Produced by Surface 🎹🥁🎸 NOW WE HAVE TO GIVE CREDIT TO THE BANDS OF THE ’80s THAT CAME WITH EVERYTHING. Because this beat right here? ONE OF THE COLDEST IN THE ’80s. 🥶🔥 Where do I even start?! Bernard Jackson. David “Pic” Conley. David Townsend. These three came together and created something that was SO MUSICAL. The groove. The bass. Those synths. The percussion. That beautiful flute. The harmonies. EVERYTHING HAS A PURPOSE. And that’s what I love about ’80s R&B production. These artists weren’t just making records — THEY WERE BUILDING SOUNDS. “Happy” has that smooth, mid-tempo pocket where the groove just pulls you in. It’s soulful, it’s polished, it’s funky, and it still sounds incredible decades later. And let’s talk about how BIG this record actually was. “Happy” reached #2 on the Billboard R&B chart and #20 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1987. It became one of Surface’s signature records and helped push their debut album toward major commercial success. AND THIS WAS JUST THE BEGINNING. Surface would go on to become one of the defining groups of the Quiet Storm/R&B era, with songs like “Closer Than Friends,” “Shower Me With Your Love,” and “You Are My Everything.” Their lush harmonies and production style even helped pave the way for ’90s vocal groups like Boyz II Men and Blackstreet. But THIS RECORD?! “HAPPY” IS A MASTERCLASS. This is why I always say: DON’T JUST LISTEN TO THE SONG — LISTEN TO THE PRODUCTION. 🎧 Listen to what these musicians were doing. Listen to the arrangements. Listen to the pocket. Listen to how every instrument works together. THE ’80s HAD SOME SERIOUS MUSICIANS. And Bernard Jackson, David “Pic” Conley & David Townsend deserve their flowers for this one. 💐 SURFACE — “HAPPY.” A BEAUTIFUL RECORD. A BEAUTIFUL GROOVE. A BEAUTIFUL ERA. THE PRODUCTION WAS COLD. 🥶 #Surface #Happy #80sRNB - @thegcinco
