@farmhop.app: California has 70,000 fewer acres of wine grapes than it had in 2023. The state's grape acreage survey, released April 22 by the California Department of Food and Agriculture with USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service, estimates wine grape acreage at 610,000 acres in 2023, 580,000 in 2024 and 540,000 in 2025, and its detailed data reflects vine removals from over 21,000 acres during the past twelve months. Bearing acreage fell from 570,000 to 510,000, and young vines not yet bearing dropped 25 percent in one year, from 40,000 acres to 30,000. The survey covered about 6,500 growers and its numbers are estimates. Ag Alert reported in September that vineyard owners removed an estimated one quarter of the state's winegrape acreage, a larger figure than the survey's decline of about 11.5 percent.
