@.carolgiselle: Can we talk about word problems in first grade?! 😭 Because the second my students see two numbers in a word problem, they immediately want to ADD THEM. It does not matter what the problem is asking, they see two numbers and addition is the answer lol. Word problems have definitely been a challenge in my classroom, and one thing I’m learning is that sometimes we have to slow down and focus on comprehension before we even think about solving. Today, during our Eureka math lesson, I decided to bring out manipulatives so my students could physically act out the problem. We knew how many we started with, but we didn’t know how many fell. Instead of just looking at the numbers, I wanted my students to actually understand what was happening in the story. And THIS is why hands-on learning is so important, especially for our little learners who are still developing those foundational math skills. One thing I also want teachers to notice is the end of the video when I say, “show me, show me, show me!” This is such a simple but powerful formative assessment strategy. In those few seconds, I can quickly identify which students understand the concept and which students need additional support. Those are the students I’ll be targeting during intervention so they can get more opportunities to practice. I know how difficult it can be to keep up with the pacing of a curriculum while also making sure our students are actually understanding what we’re teaching. But sometimes we have to slow down to move forward. And although this is a first grade lesson, using manipulatives to build comprehension is something that can support students in second and third grade too! I hope seeing this lesson in action gives another teacher an idea they can bring into their own classroom. We’re all learning, adjusting, and figuring out what works best for our students. ❤️ #TeacherTok #FirstGradeTeacher #ElementaryTeacher #MathIntervention #TeachersOfTikTok

Our new math curriculum is so difficult for me to teach and my students to learn. There are days I could just cry because it’s so frustrating.

I did activities with whiteboards where they write the answer and I have them all show me. What if kids are simply copying each other? How do you gauge or prevent that to accumulate more valid observations abt who needs extra help?

As a first grade teacher this really warms my heart. People don’t always understand what it takes and what we sacrifice to educate these little humans. If you aren’t passionate about what u do it just won’t work and this is one of the toughest yet under appreciated career path 🥺 Phenomenal job Miss Fernandez 🫶🏽🫶🏽🫶🏽💕

You are an amazing teacher, no-one could ever doubt that. How do you deal with the more passive/quiet students who aren't necessarily "group" oriented?

get a microphone so you won’t strain your voice, relax your muscles try some jaw strain release, some lights can be covered with mesh cloth to lessen the strain on eyes and potential headaches, It is not the end of the world if the kids can’t learn, it isn’t you it’s their world they grew up in… technology based and not socially based.
