Ever noticed your angle grinder (or any power tool with a motor) draws a high current when you first switch it on, then quickly drops to a much lower running current? For example: 26.8A at start → stabilizes at 5.6A. This is completely normal and is called inrush current (or starting current). Here’s why it happens: When the motor is at a complete standstill, there is almost no back-EMF (the voltage the motor generates that opposes the supply). At that moment, the only thing limiting the current is the low resistance of the windings. The motor also has to overcome the inertia of the rotor and grinding wheel. As a result, the current can surge to 3–7 times the normal running value for a fraction of a second to a couple of seconds. Once the motor reaches speed, back-EMF builds up, the effective voltage across the windings drops, and the current settles to the steady running value needed to overcome friction and the actual load. That’s why a tool that runs happily on a 10A or 16A circuit can still trip a breaker the moment you switch it on — the brief surge is what the breaker reacts to. #insrushcurrent#highstartingtorque#clampmeter.
