It was once one of the most common birds of prey on the Indian subcontinent. By 2007, only about 1 in every 1,000 was left in India. The main cause was diclofenac, an anti-inflammatory painkiller given to sick cattle and other livestock. When a treated animal died within a few days, the drug was still in its body. Vultures that ate enough of it died of kidney failure. Scientists published the link in the journal Nature in 2004. In 2006, India withdrew licences to make diclofenac for animals. Since the ban, the decline of the white-rumped vulture (Gyps bengalensis) has slowed and may have reversed. But in 2015, only a few thousand were thought to remain in India, possibly up to the low tens of thousands. It is listed as Critically Endangered. A medicine meant to help one animal nearly erased another. Photo by Ravi.sangeetha (CC BY-SA 4.0), modified
