We use #4 because the required process to protect smaller than #4 is more costly than the larger wire. You can sleeve it in pvc without bonding fittings if it’s near a path. You can’t do that with #6. So on the exam the answer is #6 but in practicality most use #4 and don’t really know why.

#6 only if it’s the rods by themselves. If you run it from rods to utilities check the size table.
