@general.vibes4: Surgeons in Moscow, Russia, have reported performing the world’s first human spinal cord transplant. The procedure involved replacing a damaged section of an adult patient’s spinal cord with tissue from a brain-dead donor. Science journalist Helen Thomson reported the claim in New Scientist on October 21, 2026. Surgeon Xiaoping Ren said he led the operation at Moscow’s Sklifosovsky Institute for Emergency Medicine. Ren works at the Second Affiliated Hospital of Guangxi University of Chinese Medicine in China. He said the patient had suffered a complete spinal cord injury three years earlier. The team reportedly used microsurgery and polyethylene glycol, or PEG, to join the donor tissue to the patient’s spinal cord. PEG can help cell membranes fuse. Ren said the patient was doing well after surgery. However, that does not establish whether the transplant restored movement or sensation. Melissa Andrews, a researcher at the University of Southampton in the UK, raised concerns about infection and further harm. She also questioned whether the animal research supporting this approach was strong enough. Andrew Jackson at Newcastle University called for evidence to undergo peer review. Whether the transplanted tissue can restore useful nerve connections remains uncertain. #MedicalResearch #Russia #scientists
