I got called out to work on this fallow deer doe that was losing weight and had developed a large swelling along her jaw. Initially, I expected to find an infection—possibly a bad tooth, an abscess, or a problem involving the jawbone. Once I got her sedated and could perform a thorough oral exam, I realized there was a lot more going on. I found: • A large wad of plastic mixed with food packed inside her cheek • A missing tooth • A loose tooth that needed to be removed • An oronasal fistula that would eventually need repair • Unequal range of motion in her jaw, most likely from a previous traumatic injury • Significant tartar buildup, suggesting she had not been chewing normally for quite some time There were multiple problems to address, but I couldn’t fix everything at once. My first priority was getting the plastic and impacted food out of her mouth and trying to get her strong enough to eat, drink, and regain some weight. I removed the obstruction and gave her medications and supportive care to help her feel better. I was also concerned that she may have swallowed additional plastic that could be causing problems farther down the GI tract. If she stabilized, my plan was to come back and address the remaining dental problems and repair the fistula. Unfortunately, we never got that opportunity. Despite our efforts, this doe succumbed to her condition. We did not find plastic obstructing her GI tract, but by the time we were able to intervene, she was simply too debilitated to recover. Sometimes we can fix the problem. Sometimes we get there too late. But every case is worth trying. #TheWildlifeVet #DrSamWilkinson #FallowDeer #Veterinarian #ExoticWildlifeVet
