@theargentgroup: Researchers at ETH Zurich have built tiny robots powered by lab-grown mouse muscle tissue. In laboratory tests, the robots could jump, swim, walk and grasp objects. The devices combine living muscle tissue with a soft, water-rich material called hydrogel. One robot jumped about 5 millimeters with a single muscle contraction, while a walking version moved at 6.2 millimeters per second. The researchers used computer simulations and light-based 3D printing to design the muscle and its supporting structure together. Their design achieved up to 11 times greater range of motion than earlier systems using a comparable amount of muscle tissue. The technology is still experimental. The living muscle needs nutrients to survive, and keeping larger muscle-powered robots supplied with oxygen and nutrients remains a challenge.
