@bluetsunami2026: "The Fantasticks", the legendary Off-Broadway musical that ran from 1960 to 2002, is getting a fagulous reboot and making its Broadway debut! I saw the show back in the 1990’s, back then, it was about a boy and a girl whose scheming fathers manipulated them into falling in love. Fast-forward to 2026, and things have changed a bit: the fathers are now mothers, the boy and girl are now two boys, and the whole show has gotten a whole lot gayer! Come to think of it, back in the day, I was supposedly straight too…. So I guess The Fantasticks and I have something in common: we both took a little time to come out, and now we're ready for Broadway! But beyond the fabulous makeover, does this new production still capture the magic of the original? In other words, is it still fantastickal? I can say this, I would recommend this show whole-heartedly because it has a huge heart and because it’s gay, and by gay, I mean happy, and because the mothers are adorbz. And then there's “Try to Remember.” You may have never seen The Fantasticks, or even heard of the show, but chances are you've heard this song. It's one of those timeless melodies that somehow finds its way into our lives, whether we realize where it came from or not. And that got me thinking… whatever happened to the great Broadway showtune? I looked back at my playbills from the past year. Some wonderful productions, talented casts, beautiful orchestrations, and scores that sounded terrific while I was sitting in the theater. But here's the thing: I walked out humming absolutely nothing! When was the last time a new Broadway musical gave us a song that truly stayed with us? For me, it was probably Hamilton. And that was over a decade ago! With all the incredibly talented composers, lyricists, and producers working in theater today, I can't help but wonder: Why aren't we getting more songs that become classics? The kind you hear once and want to hear on loop. The kind that make their way onto your playlists and stay there for decades. Think about Hello, Dolly!, Show Boat, Phantom, Les Mis, Rent, and countless others. These shows didn't just give us wonderful evenings at the theater. They gave us MUSIC. Songs that became part of our lives, songs that generations continue to sing, and songs that have outlived the productions that introduced them. I'm not saying today's musicals aren't good. Many are fantastic! But somewhere along the way, I feel we've lost a little of that magic of the unforgettable Broadway melody. And sitting there listening to “Try to Remember,” I was reminded of something, a great musical entertains you for an evening. A great Broadway song stays with you for a lifetime.
