In 1849, Hippolyte Fizeau measured the speed of light on Earth using a simple yet ingenious method. He built a wheel with 720 teeth and sent a beam of light through the gaps between them. The light traveled to a mirror about 8.63 kilometers away and back. If the wheel turned by exactly one tooth spacing, the returning light struck the next tooth and was blocked. By knowing the distance, the number of teeth, and the rotation speed, Fizeau could calculate how long the light took to travel. This experiment shows that with simple tools and mechanical precision, scientists can uncover fundamental laws of nature. His result was about 313,000 kilometers per second, slightly higher than today's accepted value, yet a major milestone in the history of science. Today, measuring light's travel time with lasers remains the foundation of many modern measurement technologies.
