@dharamsevaa: The village's lowest man explained the Gita. The scholar who mocked a seven-year-old could only stand and listen. Panjokhara, 1664. Guru Harkrishan Sahib Ji was travelling from Kiratpur toward Delhi. He was seven years old, and he had been Guru since he was five. The sangat halted at a village near Ambala. A Brahmin scholar named Lal Chand came to the gathering, proud of his learning and prouder still of his caste. He looked down at the child seated on the takht and said, "You carry the name of Krishan, yet you cannot even read Krishan's own Gita." What kind of Guru is this? Guru Ji did not argue with him. He said something far larger instead. The meaning of the Gita is not the property of the learned. Whoever receives grace, even an illiterate man, can speak it. Lal Chand laughed and chose the man he thought made it impossible: Chhajju Ram, the village water-carrier. He could not read or write. Speech came hard to him. His caste forbade him even to hear the Vedas spoken aloud. Guru Ji looked at him with great love and placed one small hand on his head. That was all. Chhajju Ram set down his water pot. He raised his head. And he spoke the meanings of the Gita that the pandit, who had spent his whole life inside those very texts, had never once heard. The manuscripts fell from Lal Chand's hands. The man who came in arrogance bowed at the Guru’s feet and begged forgiveness. That day, both became Sikhs: the scholar and the water-carrier. Learning makes no one great. Neither does caste. The one upon whom the Guru's gaze falls becomes the highest of all. That scholar who is full of greed and arrogant pride is known to be a fool.
