I'd like to think they cared about their loved ones so much that they didn't want them to become monstrous shadows of their former selves. Side note: this reminds me of the anti-vampire burial practices in Čelákovice (today's Czech Republic), like binding limbs, or placing heavy rocks and large stones directly on top of bodies.

I’d definitely love to hear more about England’s DMVs! But I find the psychology of a medieval village suffering from malnutrition while reporting so many “revenants” fascinating. Was it a psychological need to blame something for their misfortunes, or could community leaders have used fear of these creatures to deflect blame for mismanaging resources? The psychology behind it is fascinating to consider!

This makes me wonder if a couple of people that their neighbors thought were dead woke up before people knew how to take a pulse or something. Like I’m so intrigued by how this whole thing started. Also possibly people were just paranoid.
