This week, I'm reading The Poppy Fields, by Nikki Erlick. In The Poppy Fields, New York Times bestselling author Nikki Erlick (The Measure) delivers a warm and thought-provoking story set around a high-concept wellness resort in the California desert. The facility offers grieving guests a controversial, month-long medically induced sleep to bypass the acute heartache of loss—promising a fresh start, but raising the question of whether skipping the pain also numbs the capacity for joy. The book revolves around this unique resort and its promise: wake up refreshed and ready to move on. But from what I've seen in just the opening chapters, taking a shortcut through grief comes with a catch. And the story pulls you right into that dilemma from the start. Having spent those first few chapters getting to know these four travelers on their desert trek, I found myself totally hooked by their dynamics and distinct baggage. The writing brings so much warm energy, tension, and heart to their shared journey that it’s impossible not to lean in. It is truly a captivating read so far, and I can't wait to see how their paths converge as the story unfolds and whether they discover that the bumpy parts of life are what make the bright moments worth having. #booksuggestion #weekendreads #fiction #depression #selfhelp
