Bro Dropped the Heaviest Quote in Cinematic History and Walked Away. The most disturbing part of Shutter Island’s ending may be that Teddy Daniels finally understands exactly who he is. Sitting beside Chuck, he asks whether it would be worse to live as a monster or die as a good man. On the surface, it seems as though he has slipped back into his delusion. But his final words suggest something much darker. Teddy may be completely sane. He remembers his wife, his children, and the unbearable guilt attached to what happened. Instead of carrying that truth for the rest of his life, he appears to deliberately become “Teddy” one last time, knowing the doctors will take him away for a lobotomy. The tragedy is not that he loses touch with reality. It is that reality becomes too painful for him to keep living with. #shutterisland #teddydaniels #movieending
