@alstewartrecovery: Sometimes the person who loves someone with addiction the most is the person suffering silently behind the scenes. 1️⃣ “Sometimes I’m frightened when my phone rings.” Because she’s terrified it might be the call she’s been dreading. 2️⃣ “I don’t know whether I’m helping or making things worse.” Every time she gives money, makes excuses or rescues them, she wonders whether she’s protecting them or protecting their addiction. 3️⃣ “Sometimes I feel angry at my own child.” And then she feels terrible for even thinking it. 4️⃣ “I miss who they used to be.” She remembers the little boy or girl she raised and wonders where that person has gone. 5️⃣ “I’m exhausted, but I’m scared to stop trying.” Because somewhere inside her is the fear that if she steps away, something terrible might happen. ❤️‍🩹 And here’s what I want every mother loving someone through addiction to hear. You can love your child with everything you have. You can support their recovery. You can encourage them to get help. But you cannot recover for them. And you are not a bad mother for being tired, angry, frightened or needing some peace in your own life. You deserve support too.
