@guided_breathing: 5-5 equal breathing in Palermo, Sicily, Italy. Another breathing exercise from one of my trips to this beautiful island! I really enjoy filming these videos while traveling. Sometimes I find a quiet spot in nature, and other times I end up recording somewhere in the middle of a city. Palermo is definitely a different setting from the forests and mountains where I usually practice, but that's also what makes it interesting. For this guided breathing session, I'm using one of my favorite techniques: 5-5 equal breathing. Breathe in gently for 5 seconds, then breathe out for 5 seconds. No breath holds, no complicated counting. Just a steady rhythm of 6 breaths per minute. I've experimented with dozens of different breathing techniques over the years, but I still think equal breathing is one of the best places to start if you're new to breathwork. What I like about this particular rhythm is that it doesn't require much concentration. Once I've followed a few breaths, the counting becomes pretty easy, and I can focus on enjoying the exercise. And unlike some of the techniques I share, there's actually quite a bit of research on breathing at approximately 6 breaths per minute. Studies suggest that slow breathing around 5–6 breaths per minute can increase heart rate variability during practice and influence the relationship between breathing and heart rate. Research also suggests that slow, comfortable breathing may help reduce perceived stress and anxiety. Of course, that doesn't mean exactly 6 breaths per minute is the perfect rhythm for everyone. Some people feel more comfortable breathing a little faster or slower, and that's completely fine. Personally, I like how easy it is to fit this breathing exercise into my day. Whether I'm at home, traveling, or taking a short break from work, I can practice it almost anywhere. And that's something I really want to show with these videos. You don't need a special location, expensive equipment, or a complicated routine to spend a few minutes paying attention to your breathing. Just remember to keep your breaths gentle. You don't need to fill your lungs completely or force the 5-second counts. Try this guided breathing exercise with me and let me know how you feel afterward! I offer private 1-on-1 breath coaching, individual consultations, and access to my monthly library of longer guided breathing sessions. I keep the number of clients limited so I can give everyone enough personal attention. Interested? Feel free to contact me at [email protected].
