How do you know God actually spoke? That question became one of the biggest reasons I eventually left Christianity and why I call myself a non-resistant nonbeliever today. For more than 20 years as a pastor, I stood in pulpits and told thousands of people things like, “This is what God says.” I sincerely believed it. But eventually I had to confront something I had taken for granted. Even if you believe the Bible is inspired by God, human beings wrote the texts. Human beings copied the manuscripts. Human beings debated and formalized the canon. Human beings translated the words. Human beings built doctrines from them. And human beings stand in churches every week explaining what they believe God meant. That doesn’t automatically make Christianity false. But it creates an epistemic problem I still can’t get around: How do we reliably distinguish God actually communicating from a sincere human being believing God communicated? Sincere, educated Christians can read the same Bible, pray to the same God, and become convinced of opposite theological conclusions. That became part of the divine-hiddenness problem for me. If God exists, wants me to know him, knows what would convince me, and knows I’m genuinely open to being convinced, why is divine communication so difficult to distinguish from ordinary human interpretation? I’m still open. I just can’t build certainty on “God said it” until I have some reliable way to know that God actually did. #DivineHiddenness #Christianity #HearingGod #ChristianDeconstruction #Deconstruction
