Saudi Arabia's history is closely connected to the rise of Islam and the early Islamic caliphates. In the 7th century, Islam emerged in the Arabian Peninsula under the Prophet Muhammad, who unified much of Arabia before his death in 632. The Rashidun Caliphate expanded rapidly beyond Arabia, followed by the Umayyad and Abbasid Caliphates, which established major centers of Islamic civilization. Although political power later shifted to other regions, Mecca and Medina remained the most important holy cities of Islam, attracting pilgrims from across the Muslim world. Over the following centuries, the Arabian Peninsula was governed by various local rulers and regional powers. The Ottoman Empire gradually extended its influence over parts of the peninsula, including the Hejaz, where Mecca and Medina are located. In the 18th century, Muhammad ibn Saud, the ruler of Diriyah, formed an alliance with the religious scholar Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab in 1744. This alliance laid the foundation for the First Saudi State, which expanded across much of central Arabia before Ottoman-Egyptian forces destroyed it in 1818. The Second Saudi State was established in 1824 but collapsed in 1891 after internal conflicts and rivalry with the Rashidi dynasty. In 1902, Abdulaziz ibn Saud captured Riyadh and began rebuilding Saudi power. Through military campaigns and political alliances, he gradually unified much of the Arabian Peninsula. On September 23, 1932, he officially established the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and became its first king. The discovery of oil in 1938 transformed the country's economy, and commercial oil production expanded significantly after World War II. Saudi Arabia became a major global energy producer and an increasingly influential country in Middle Eastern and international affairs. Following Abdulaziz's death in 1953, his sons succeeded him as kings. During the late 20th century, oil wealth funded rapid modernization, infrastructure development, and expanded public services. However, the country also faced regional conflicts and security challenges, including the 1990–1991 Gulf War, when foreign troops were stationed in Saudi Arabia to defend against Iraq. In the 21st century, the kingdom began pursuing economic diversification to reduce its dependence on oil. Since King Salman became monarch in 2015, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has led major reforms under the Vision 2030 program, promoting tourism, entertainment, investment, and new industries. These changes have expanded some social opportunities while the country continues to face international scrutiny over human rights and political freedoms. Today, Saudi Arabia remains an absolute monarchy, a major oil-producing nation, and the birthplace of Islam, with Mecca and Medina continuing to hold profound religious significance for Muslims worldwide. #History #Edit #Asia #SaudiArabia #Historytok
