Emotional safety can be surprisingly hard to define, especially if you’ve spent a long time without it, but it tends to show up most clearly in how a relationship feels when something needs saying. With someone who is emotionally safe, you can share what’s bothering you without bracing for their reaction. You don’t lie awake planning the perfect wording or worrying that raising it will cost you days of coldness. You trust that they’ll make a genuine effort to listen and that you won’t be judged for having feelings in the first place. That doesn’t mean they’ll get it right every single time. They might bristle now and again, as anyone can, but there’s an underlying willingness to hear you and to own their part, and over time you know you’ll be taken seriously. You’ll also notice it in how conversations end. In a safe relationship, talking things through usually leaves you clearer than when you started. There might be some back and forth, a bit of discomfort, a few attempts before you land somewhere, but you come away understanding each other better and things tend to get easier afterwards. In an unsafe relationship, the pattern looks very different. One person keeps reaching out, trying to explain how they feel, trying to reconnect or repair, while the other stays locked in self-protection, getting defensive, pushing the blame back across the table and dodging any responsibility they can. That can be deeply manipulative, and it often leaves the person reaching out more confused and unsettled than before they spoke. Perhaps the most telling question of all, though, is who you become in the relationship. Do you find yourself constantly filtering what you say, holding things back, hiding parts of yourself, treading carefully just to keep things calm, or endlessly working on yourself in the hope of eventually being good enough? Or can you show up as you are and feel seen, respected and loved for exactly that? The second is what emotional safety looks like. The first usually points to a confusing, dysfunctional or emotionally abusive relationship, however normal it may have come to feel. Noticing how much of yourself you’ve had to shrink is often the clearest sign of whether a relationship is truly good for you Official accounts and resources: www.ellyanastasiades.com #relationshiptok #relationships #toxicrelationship #relationshipabuse #relationshipproblems
