THE FRENCH EMPEROR | Napoleon Bonaparte (1769–1821) was Emperor of the French from 1804 to 1814 and again in 1815. Born in Corsica, he advanced through the artillery ranks during the French Revolution, securing prominence following the siege of Toulon in 1793 and the Italian campaign of 1796–1797. In 1799, he orchestrated the Coup of 18 Brumaire, overthrew the Directory, and established the French Consulate as First Consul. He subsequently consolidated political authority, culminating in his coronation as Emperor in 1804. His domestic administration instituted comprehensive institutional and legal centralisation. The Napoleonic Code of 1804 codified civil law across the empire, establishing statutory legal equality, secular authority over civil state matters, and protection of property rights. Economic restructuring included the founding of the Banque de France and tax reform, while the Concordat of 1801 re-established formal relations with the Papacy to secure domestic stability. Foreign policy was defined by the Napoleonic Wars against successive European coalitions. Operational command delivered victories at Austerlitz, Jena-Auerstedt, and Friedland, restructuring continental geopolitics and expanding French dominion. Strategic vulnerability emerged through the economic enforcement of the Continental System, prolonged conflict in the Peninsular War, and the attrition of the 1812 invasion of Russia. Following the Sixth Coalition’s entry into Paris in 1814, Napoleon abdicated and entered exile on Elba.
