Baoulé People - Dance of the Goly The Goly dance (also spelled Goli) is a traditional ceremonial masquerade dance of the Baoulé people in the central part of Côte d’Ivoire. It is a protective and spiritual dance that involves the entire village community and is performed during significant events. Shown here is a dancing performing in the Kpan or mother mask, a beautiful, human-faced mask painted red, associated with both fertility and pregnancy for women. The dancer wears an elaborate costume consisting of an antelope hide cape over fresh palm leaf fibers and a raffia skirt with squares of metal wrapped around the lower leg. The dancing involves vigorous, repeated, and abrupt movements that are believed to be those of a spirit temporarily inhabiting the dancer’s body. The dancers carry large sticks that as the dance ends is smacked against the animal skin making a loud whip-like bang!
