There are moments when you suddenly realize that you've changed. Not because something dramatic happened. Sometimes it's something incredibly small. You hear a song you used to love, and it doesn't hit the same anymore. You walk past a place where you used to spend your evenings, and somehow it feels smaller than you remember. You find an old photo and stare at the person in it for a little too long. You remember what they wanted. What they were afraid of. Who they used to talk to every day. And for a second, you wonder where that version of you went. The strange thing about growing up is that you rarely notice it while it's happening. There is no exact moment when you become a different person. You just slowly stop doing certain things. You stop waiting for certain messages. You stop explaining yourself to people who never really listened. You stop caring about things that once kept you awake at night. And sometimes you even stop recognizing the person you used to be. At first, that can feel a little sad. Because even the versions of ourselves we didn't particularly like still belonged to us. The awkward version. The insecure version. The one who cared too much. The one who stayed up thinking about a conversation from three days ago. The one who made stupid decisions and then wondered why. You might wish you could go back and tell them everything you know now. Tell them that it gets better. Tell them not to be so afraid. Tell them that the people they are trying so hard to impress won't matter forever. Tell them to enjoy certain moments because they won't understand how special they were until they're gone. But you can't go back. And maybe that's okay. Because that person was doing their best with what they knew. They didn't have your experience. They didn't know what you know now. They were simply trying to survive a life they hadn't learned how to understand yet. So maybe instead of being embarrassed by who you used to be, you can be a little kinder to them. After all, they carried you here. Every mistake. Every awkward conversation. Every sleepless night. Every goodbye. Every tiny victory nobody noticed. All of it became part of the person you are now. And the person you are now isn't finished either. There will be another version of you someday. Someone who will look back at the life you're living today and probably think: “I can't believe I was worried about that.” Maybe they'll laugh at the things that hurt you. Maybe they'll miss the things you take for granted. Maybe they'll wish they could come back to one completely ordinary evening that you didn't realize you'd never experience in quite the same way again. That's why I think we should be a little gentler with the present. Not everything has to become a memory before we're allowed to appreciate it. Sometimes you're already standing inside a moment you'll miss someday. You just don't know it yet. So let yourself enjoy the boring days. Keep the stupid photos. Save the messages that make you smile. Listen to the song again. Stay outside a little longer. Talk to someone you love even if you have nothing important to say. Because life doesn't always announce the moments that matter. Most of them simply happen. Quietly. And then, one day, you realize they were never ordinary at all. You don't have to hold on to the past. Just remember to be present while you're creating the memories you'll one day miss. 🤍
