🍂🍄 Fall has us looking down as much as up. Golden leaves overhead, damp earth under our boots, and little shaggy surprises tucked into the hillside. These are the afternoons that remind us why we love exploring the woods around our farm. Our latest fascination? Shaggy mane mushrooms—Coprinus comatus. With their tall white caps and tousled scales, they look like they showed up wearing tiny wigs. And they run on their own schedule. The challenge isn’t necessarily finding a rare mushroom. It’s finding the right patch at the right moment. Shaggy manes can appear in abundance, but their fresh stage is brief. As they mature, their gills turn from white to pink and then black, and the caps begin dissolving into ink. That transformation is called deliquescence—part of an extraordinary process that helps expose and release their spores. A mushroom that practically writes its own disappearing act. 🖋️ We’ve been watching a patch midway down a north-facing hill, paying attention to more than the caps. Which areas stay damp after rain? Where does leaf litter collect? Where do shade, soil, and decaying material come together? North-facing slopes often hold moisture longer, and we’re exploring whether that helps explain this patch. Beneath the surface, shaggy mane mycelium feeds on decomposing organic material, participating in the recycling that keeps woodland soils alive. That connection matters to us as farmers. The soil, the season, the food, and the next generation of growth are all part of the same story. There’s nutritional interest here, too: shaggy manes contain protein and dietary fiber and are naturally low in fat. Researchers are studying their compounds for potential health effects, but laboratory findings aren’t the same as proven benefits from dinner. For us, the appeal already includes walking, slowing down, learning something new, and cooking with the seasons. Recent rain and changing fall colors have given us plenty of reasons to keep exploring. Some finds become photographs, some become questions, and properly identified culinary mushrooms can inspire a meal outdoors—with the skillet sizzling and the evening light stretching across the grass. We’re sharing our field observations and adventures; photographs alone aren’t an identification guide for your plate. What gets you out on the trail in fall—the mushrooms, the colors, the quiet, or the promise of something good sizzling afterward? 🍳🌳 #grew2brew #AHomesteadBrew #ShaggyMane #FallForaging #Mycology
