For years, we’ve been told that women’s rights must be protected. That women should be free to make their own decisions and that nobody should dictate what they can or cannot wear. But when a Muslim girl in Azerbaijan is reportedly denied access to education because she refuses to remove her hijab, where are those same voices? Because the very people who speak so passionately about freedom and tolerance often seem remarkably quiet when it’s a Muslim woman’s religious convictions being targeted. Now, as Muslims, our understanding of right and wrong isn’t built upon the idea that personal choice is the ultimate authority. We have our own beliefs, principles and obligations rooted in our submission to Allah. But we’re asking those who champion freedom, tolerance and women’s rights to be consistent with the principles they themselves claim to uphold. If you believe in religious freedom, why does that freedom suddenly become negotiable when someone takes their religion seriously? Principles that are only defended when they’re convenient aren’t really principles at all. And if your commitment to women’s rights disappears the moment a woman chooses to practise Islam, perhaps it’s worth asking what you’re actually defending.
