While I was on maternity leave the nurse covering me pushed a patient who was in a wheelchair really hard and let go. He hit the doorway and scraped and bruised his ankle. He was elderly and apparently could be grumpy. That nurse was mean in general. The CNA that witnessed it checked on him afterwards but was afraid to say anything because she didn’t think management would do anything and then she’d be targeted. (Not that far fetched) She knew I was returning to work that week so she waited for me. Luckily the man was still there and I was able to see the healing scrapes. I went to the hospital Social Worker first because I knew she would make sure it was taken care of. It became huge! The Union got involved. She normally worked the evening shift. Turns out, after interviewing all staff, she had a history of abusing mostly the elderly patients. I had to give a deposition. She was found guilty and fired. I wasn’t trying to get her fired but my patients were always my priority.

I witnessed this once years ago and I got the girl away from the resident and took her in the hall and told her to stay away from the resident. Then when administrators came in I went to them

A CNA is an Certified Nursing Assistant. They do the grunt work of the nursing community. They are eyes and ears of the nurses. If I see a CNA abusing a resident or patient........there's no question what I'm doing. I'm telling the immediate supervisor. Right then. Right there.
