Nearly 75% Of NFL Players Who D*ed From 2008 To 2023 Had CTE, New Study Estimates A new study estimates that nearly 75% of NFL players who d*ed between 2008 and 2023 had chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE. Researchers from Boston University, Mass General Brigham and the Concussion & CTE Foundation published the study in JAMA Network Open on Wednesday, Oct. 28. It builds on an August study from the university. They looked at 2,362 former players. That included 396 players who donated their brains and 1,966 others whose National Death Index records were reviewed. About 94% of the donated brains showed CTE. Those donors often played longer in the league and d*ed younger. CTE is a brain disease that causes brain cells to d*e over time. According to the Mayo Clinic, it is typically linked to repeated head injuries. But the study adds important limits. CTE is diagnosed in stages. It is unclear if the condition was tied to other diseases that contributed to the players’ daths. The study says many cases “may have been early stage at the time of dath and possibly symptom free.” Researchers also say it is unclear if CTE is as widespread among college and high school athletes. They say the estimates do not predict how many living players have CTE. Lead author Julia Gallini noted that CTE is found in less than 1% of donors to community brain banks. She called the 75% estimate “concerning.” The NFL told ABC News it “continuously strives to make the game of football safer.” The NFL Players’ Association said it remains committed to supporting scientific research. What should the NFL do next? #CTE #nfl #bostonuniversity #Football #brainhealth
