I think it comes from the idea of being wanted by a man. Especially if you’re a black woman who grows up in a predominantly white space in the majority of people around you want to date white women . And The white men aren’t looking at dark skinned black women to date ( or at least that’s what she’s thinking) so in her mind being white means to be perceived as attractive from men.
