If you’re interested in the type of pump being discussed here, try searching for “automatic submersible utility pump”. Most things called “sump pumps” have mechanical switches activated by floats that are meant to engage only in 6-8” of water.

Another thing everyone should do is review your homeowners or renters insurance and adjust according to your risk tolerance. Be aware that almost no general residential property insurance covers flood damage, so you need separate (unfortunately stupidly expensive) flood insurance. Also, be aware that “flood” usually means “water originating outside of the residence” not just “the river overflowed”, so things like mudslides, localized flooding due to poor drainage, hydrostatic pressure from groundwater (ask me how I know), etc are usually not covered under standard insurance and require separate flood insurance.
