@rtenews: Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has won a historic fourth term in a shock result that has defied polls and precedent. According to results released by Brazil’s Superior Electoral Court, Mr Lula, candidate of the ruling Workers’ Party, received 51.79% of the valid votes in Sunday’s presidential election, while Flavio Bolsonaro, the Liberal Party’s presidential candidate and son of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, received 48.23% of the vote. However, Mr Bolsonaro has refused to accept defeat and has said he would ask for the result to be overturned due to a ruling from a Supreme Court justice that extended voting for two hours. During his campaign, Mr Lula pointed to a track record of falling poverty and inequality while pledging to strengthen public healthcare, improve care for the elderly and continue efforts to combat climate change.
