One of the last things I'm planting before winter settles in is GARLIC! 🧄 While most of the garden is winding down for the season, garlic is just getting started. Unlike many vegetables we plant in spring, garlic benefits from spending the colder months in the ground. But why start in fall? Garlic needs a period of cold exposure, known as vernalization, to encourage proper bulb development. During fall, the cloves begin establishing their root systems. As temperatures drop, growth slows, but beneath the soil, those roots are preparing the plant for the growing season ahead. Once spring arrives, you'll notice green shoots emerging as the plant begins putting its energy into producing leaves and eventually developing a full bulb underground. A few things to know before planting: 🧄 Choose the right garlic: Hardneck varieties are especially well-suited for colder climates like ours here in northern New Jersey. 🧄 Planting depth: Plant cloves approximately 2 inches deep, with the pointed end facing upward and the root end downward. 🧄 Spacing: Give each clove about 4–6 inches of space to allow the developing bulbs room to grow. 🧄 Soil: Garlic prefers loose, fertile, well-draining soil with plenty of organic matter. 🧄 Mulching: A layer of clean straw or other suitable organic mulch helps moderate soil temperatures, retain moisture, and reduce weed growth. 🧄 Harvesting: Depending on your climate and variety, fall-planted garlic is generally ready to harvest in early to midsummer, when several of the lower leaves have turned brown. Each individual clove has the potential to grow into an entirely new bulb! So even if you only have a few cloves to spare, that's enough to begin. You don't need acres of land to grow your own food. A sunny spot, a deep container with proper drainage, and a little patience can go a long way. Are you planting garlic this fall, or will this be your first year giving it a try? 🧄 #plantinggarlic #growinggarlic #fallgardening #growyourownfood #gardeningtips
