I think that we definitely overuse the term lightskin now & days. Just because someone is of a lighter brown complexion than you that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re lightskin. Their is a difference between being brownskin or medium brownskin/caramel and lightskin. Nicki Minaj is a brownskin black woman. Historically speaking a lightskin person strictly meant a black person who is high yellow or light tan. For example Steph curry and Mariah the scientist are lightskin.

Y’all do realize that brown and light aren’t mutually exclusive, right? Brown describes the pigmentation of someone’s skin, while light describes the depth of their complexion. Nicki Minaj can be both brown and light skinned. Having melanin doesn’t automatically make someone medium or dark skinned. And this is coming from someone who actually studied esthetics. Y’all are comparing two different things.

To contribute them to “not being a colorist to them being Caribbean is absolutely crazy, because Caribbeans are known for bleaching. Those two are lighter, but they’re not what’s considered light skinned. They probably haven’t bleached theirs, because they are in America for the most part. You can say that colorism is a thing here, but bleaching is not our thing.🤷🏽♀️
