@spicycounselor: Recovering from high control religions and religious trauma is complex work, often requiring the help of a professional counselor or therapist.
But sometimes you find little bits of healing all on your own, just by sharing with those you trust who can validate that some weird $h!t happened to you.
Struggling with deconstruction? Navigating through religious trauma or spiritual abuse?

So spending a significant portion of my childhood memorizing Bible verses and getting tiny gems in a vest wasn’t normal? 😂

My boyfriend has asked me multiple times, “what did they do to you? 😳“ when I’m talking about things I used to believe or things that were done/said to me. It blows peoples minds what I grew up with

Ex jw here. Peoples jaws literally drop. They are stunned to silence. It helps me realize I wasn’t making it up. It was really actually that bad.

I show people the documentary Jesus Camp and find healing in how shocked people are at the very life I grew up in

yeah. :
my wife was raised agnostic by a witch, her only experiences with christianity were going to her grandmother's baptist church a few times as a kid and general american culture osmosis. i was raised church of christ, we met when i was at the very beginning of deconstructing (the "holding on for dear life" phase, specifically). every so often i'll think of some new insane bullshit i was involved in with those churches and watch her mentally grapple with it, it's v gratifying

I knew my husband was the one when I saw the look on his face when we attended an evangelical wedding and the pastor was going over how the wife needs to submit for like 5-10 minutes. he was horrified.

My upbringing was vanilla compared to casting demons out of objects, but this is still 100% applicable. Just coping with young earth creationism and the rapture is much.

saying things out loud and seeing their faces is almost therapy.
actually to me, it is therapy.
helps me heal to have those realizations and be so happy that I'm not like that anymore.

This, but more in my therapy sessions than with friends. It felt very validating when my therapist, a professional and incredible person, would look at me with genuine concern when I told her things I was taught to believe about myself or the Christian faith that were harmful. I at first brushed it off as "no big deal" but as we kept going deeper I realized how much I was hurting from it all, how much it damaged me mentally and emotionally. We've worked very hard for a long time to deconstruct those things and unravel the web of harm that existed in my brain. I'm not 100% free of those things, probably never will be since it was engrained since childhood, but I feel so much freer, so much happier knowing my worth is not tied to following or accepting cruelty and control masked as what is "right".

my favorite way I've ever described my childhood to my husband was "Babe, you grew up with Batman, I grew up with Bibleman." 😂

Nothing makes my secular wife go "wtf" quite like my random lore drops about growing up as a pastor's kid. She now has beef with organized religion, and it's mostly my fault. 😂

Anybody else have to hold hands and stand in a circle at family events and go one by one saying “Jesus wept” or “lord is my Shepard” and then have say a prayer in unison, while watching your grandmother “shake”

Talking to fellow exvangelicals has been super healing, too. It’s confirmation that in sane stuff we were told as kids wasn’t just some fever dream or overreaction. It happened, it was weird, and it’s ok to be mad about it
