This is a tricky one on my daughters driving test she undertook someone driving 20 on a dual carriageway which was 30 which was another learner on her test… now that learner failed to reach an appropriate speed but my daughter passed, as it was the only appropriate thing she could do to get into the right lane to approach the roundabout. Now i never teach my pupils to not undertake… i think it just depends on the circumstances.

It literally says this rule applies to other high speed roads

If you look at the wording, which is the important part of the rule…. It’s says “Should” rather than “Must” one is advice one is an actual rule

Steve’s :
I had a test fail on a dual carriageway where there are lots of turn offs to the right the road is all car dealerships. My student kept a speed of just over 30 in a 40 and was passing on the left(undertaking). The right hand lane was full of cars doing less than 40 and my student quite rightly didn’t want to slow the left lane down and cause kayos so they in my mind had an appropriate speed but failed for undertaking. That dual is well known for everyone driving in the right. So had my student slowed to say 28 so not to undertake she still would of failed for not making progress and cars behind would of been affected 🙈
