🚨 PARENTS, PLEASE TAKE A MOMENT TO READ THIS. THIS HAPPENED TODAY. Today, I was sitting in my car waiting for children to get off a school bus when I noticed something that immediately caught my attention. The last little girl getting off the bus seemed hesitant. When she finally stepped off, she looked around, walked a little to the left, turned around, and then went to the right after the bus pulled away. She looked lost. I watched her standing on the sidewalk, looking back and forth, clearly frightened and unsure of where to go. I rolled down my window and asked her if she was okay. Her response broke my heart. She said, “No, I’m scared and I’m lonely.” 💔 I asked her if she knew what street she lived on. I even named the streets to the left and right, hoping one would sound familiar. She didn’t know. I tried to help her figure out where she needed to go, but she couldn’t give me much information. She knew her first name and her mother’s name, but couldn’t spell her mom’s name. She didn’t know anyone’s phone number, couldn’t tell me her street name, and didn’t know the name of her school. The only other detail she could share was that her dad drove a black Jeep. She was EIGHT YEARS OLD. At that point, I called the police because I wasn’t about to leave a frightened child standing there without knowing whether she was safe or where she belonged. Even the officers struggled to get the information they needed. Eventually, her dad pulled up. Instead of first comforting her and making sure she was okay, he began yelling at her. I don’t know the circumstances of what happened today. I don’t know if she got off at the wrong stop, if there was a misunderstanding, or if something else went wrong. But I do know that little girl was scared. And in that moment, she needed reassurance, not yelling. PARENTS, PLEASE TEACH YOUR CHILDREN THE BASICS THAT COULD HELP KEEP THEM SAFE. Depending on their age and abilities, make sure your children practice knowing: ✅ Their first and last name. ✅ Their parents’ full names. ✅ Their home address, including the street name. ✅ At least one trusted adult’s phone number. ✅ The name of their school. ✅ What to do if they get lost, get off at the wrong bus stop, or become separated from you. And please, don’t just tell them these things once. Practice with them. Ask them questions in a calm, age-appropriate way so they can become comfortable answering even when they’re nervous. Children can freeze when they’re frightened. Some may struggle to remember information under stress, even if they’ve heard it before. Practice helps, but we also need to teach them that it’s okay to ask for help. My youngest is around that age, and I made sure she learned these basics as soon as she was able to understand and communicate them. We teach our children how to read, write, count, and tie their shoes. Let’s also teach them how to communicate when they need help. I thank God that I was sitting there today, paying attention. That little girl caught my eye, and I couldn’t just drive away. As parents, we pray that nothing bad ever happens to our children. But preparation is one way we can help protect them when we’re not right beside them. We can’t control every situation our children may face. We can, however, give them tools that may help them find their way to safety. And one last thing: if your child ever gets lost or ends up somewhere they’re not supposed to be, please make sure they’re safe before you correct them. A frightened child needs to know they can tell you what happened without being afraid of your reaction. Please share this. Not to scare parents, but to remind us all that a few minutes of teaching and practicing with our children could make a difference when they need help the most. ❤️ #ParentingAwareness #ChildSafety #ProtectOurChildren #ItTakesAVillage #Tampa
