That’s interesting! Islam has a similar principle under genuine coercion, you can be permitted to say something that contradicts your faith, as long as your heart remains firm in belief. More broadly, Islamic law recognizes that necessity can make certain normally forbidden actions permissible under specific conditions. It’s interesting how religious teachings address these extreme situations.

I was told like it’s ok to eat pork if you’re starving but not if someone is trying to force convert you. These were all hypotheticals, we didn’t keep kosher

As a Jew from Iran, we say inshallah in conversation with no trouble. I’d never say something similar referring to Jesus. Allah is just the Arabic word for god. And I used the lower case letter because it’s not a name for a god, just the word for god. 🤷🏻♀️

Yes, this is what I learned also. I learned it a bit more nuanced though. If someone tells you to bow down to anyone or anything that would be considered idolatry. Christianity as being idolatry is debated, withost views saying that "these days" it isn't, these days being hundreds of years ago. Islam is completely not included in this law as it is not idolatrous.

I grew up in Maryland. Never heard this exact line, but I can see the reasoning behind it, because “allah” is litterally just the Arabic translation of “god”. One interesting note, though, the particular averah you’re supposed to die before committing isn’t just worshiping a different god, but PUBLICLY worshiping a different god. Because if someone breaks in to your house and holds a gun to your head and no one is there to see it, you can say whatever just to save your own life and it won’t matter. But if you are forced to publicly worship another god where other Jews can see you, then you risk breaking down their own faith and encouraging others to renounce G-d too, which is an existential threat for Judaism in general.

I grew up in Detroit and I remember two in particular one being idolatry and the other was murder. Meaning you can’t murder someone to save yourself. I don’t know what the third one you might be referring to is, but I imagine it’s contradicting something of the 10 Commandments.

It was a lesson taught in Scranton, PA (in a heavy handed way). I remember on Hanukkah learning the story of Hannah and her sons. She watched them die one by one rather than bow down to the king.

I vaguely remember learning about this, but my main take away from the lesson was that if there’s a gun to your head and they want you to murder someone (like a terrorist forcing you to kill your own family), you’re supposed to get shot yourself

True, and if a Christian would say praise god, not specifically Jesus we can also do that, some say even the non dual Buddhist idea of the dow also falls into one of the things we can except, at least at gun point
