me trying to set standards for our plant and them looking at me like im crazy. I want to add torque specs, bolt patterns, gaskets specs and fastener markings for visual inspection and no one wants to buy into it 😭

Always torque the nut. And always confirm dry torque vs wet torque.

When you torque the bolt you have the friction of the shaft you have to overcome.

You torque the nut I have never torqued a bolt head unless it is a head bolt or something.

How does thread pitch affect torque? 1/4-20 versus 1/4-28. I had an engineer tell me it would be the same torque for both, which didn't sound right.

For what it’s worth… that’s the engineer’s job the define/determine. The contractor is going to install what is spec’d

Most torque wrenches have accuracy percentage of + or - 3% to begin with and fall off even more over time, so it’s really not a massive deal for most auto jobs if you get it very close and add some. Just add roughly +3 to 5ft lbs if in doubt, it will do the job perfectly. When my tires list 80 ft lbs I just turn the dial to +3 ft lbs to be sure

torque on the nut, only friction would be on threads and clamping face. possibly even use a light lubricant on face but definitely not on thread as torque spec if for dry fasteners
