In October 2001, Haq secretly entered Taliban-controlled Afghanistan, hoping to persuade commanders and tribal leaders to abandon the Taliban. But his mission went disastrously wrong. Taliban fighters surrounded his small group near Logar. Desperate calls for help reached his American contacts, who appealed to Washington. The CIA reportedly deployed an armed Predator drone to attack Taliban forces, but the intervention failed. On 26 October 2001, Abdul Haq was captured and executed by the Taliban, alongside two companions. His death triggered accusations that Washington had abandoned an important Afghan ally. US intelligence officials disputed the criticism, insisting Haq had undertaken the dangerous mission despite warnings. He had friends with access to the highest levels of American power. Abdul Haq always aspired to establish a strong and unified government in Afghanistan. It is often said that he was against the Taliban government, but that is a misconception. He returned to Afghanistan to warn the Taliban that the Americans were planning to bomb the country. For that very reason, he had also warned the United States not to enter Afghanistan with military forces, as it would create immense chaos in the region — and that is precisely what happened. Unlike many other Mujahideen leaders, Abdul Haq did not come from a humble background; he came from a wealthy and influential family. Yet, he chose the path of resistance and sacrifice for his country. He firmly believed in a strong central government and wanted to bring King Zahir Shah back from exile, believing that all ethnic tribes would accept him and end their infighting, as all tribes deeply respected the King. King Zahir Shah himself had great respect for Abdul Haq and trusted his plans and vision. As Abdul Haq stated in his interview: "As I had the power to fight the Soviets, I have the same power to fight you," referring to the USA. People need to be educated about what a brave and visionary man he was. Abdul Haq was truly an unsung hero of Afghanistan.
