@60minutes: “We haven't seen the kind of compliance I would have hoped for from the social media platforms. We know they have the technology to do that,” says Julie Inman Grant, who is in charge of enforcing Australia’s social media ban for children under 16. The law puts the legal responsibility on tech companies to keep children off social media. Inman Grant’s office is currently investigating several social media platforms for potential noncompliance —and if her cases are proven, each company could face penalties of around $70 million. In one case, a 15-year-old tells 60 Minutes he was able to access social media by simply creating a new account with the same name and lying about his age. In the first three months of the ban, 50% of children under 16 who still held accounts said they hadn’t even been asked to confirm their age, her office says.
