Wohlfeil found the statement about Waco Kid was “false and intended to mislead the public.” The court determined that veterinary equipment was inadequate to image a horse of that size and made adverse credibility findings concerning witnesses. The judge also rejected the Padres’ contention that they were merely providing the venue, finding the organization had assumed responsibility for livestock care. The ruling did not ban rodeos or find the challenged events categorically unlawful under California animal cruelty laws. Plaintiffs’ attorney Bryan Pease confirmed that final judgment has been entered, making two safeguards enforceable injunctions: management must verify that no pregnant mares compete and provide comprehensive on-site veterinary equipment, including radiographic equipment capable of diagnosing livestock regardless of size. The obligations apply to the Padres and rodeo operator C5 Rodeo to the extent they remain involved in management. The requirements follow the January 2025 death of Pearl Necklace, a horse that collapsed after a saddle bronc event. A necropsy revealed the mare was approximately 11 months pregnant; her unborn foal also died. The San Diego Humane Society found insufficient evidence for criminal charges, explaining that a ruptured uterine artery caused the death and can occur spontaneously, but reiterated its opposition to rodeos.
