@lewis_expedition_co: We posted a Range Rover rollover video a couple weeks ago. In that video, many commenters asked why he didn’t just use his brakes in a stalled vehicle. The reality is that relying on brakes when the vehicle is off is extraordinarily dangerous. When the engine shuts off, you lose power assistance to the brakes and steering. You may still have some braking capability, but it can take significantly more force on the pedal to slow the vehicle down, and you may only get one or two assisted brake applications before that assistance is gone. As this British training video demonstrates, engine braking is a far better way to control a stalled vehicle on a steep descent. By selecting reverse gear and allowing the drivetrain to hold the vehicle, the driver can use the engine and transmission to control the descent before restarting the engine. It may jolt the vehicle when it starts, but the principle is to use the drivetrain to control the vehicle rather than relying entirely on the brakes #landrover #landroverdefender #british #offroad #britisharmy

instead of starting in reverse with clutch off jerking the car, why not just foot brake, start in neutral, clutch on, shift to reverse, clutch off gently and at biting point release brake.

I think the issue is that you may need to press the gas to get it started, but you also need to keep the brake pressed to prevent it from rolling downhill. Another option is to use your left foot to brake while your right foot presses the gas, then switch back to your right foot to brake and engage reverse with the clutch. Of course, switching feet could be tricky.

So why not as you stopped in the top of the hill, keep your foot on the brake and press the clutch and put it in reverse, then release the clutch and keep on braking and feathering the clutch as you go down?
