Is that where all the antler imagery in true detective comes from!?

Of course Russ Cole was based on that lol. Makes perfect sense. I do like his character quite a bit.

I feel like us neurodivergent people who have had ego death think about this all the time. Almost every night my brain is trying to figure out the universe and consciousness

I believe chronic depression is when you no longer have the ability to trim your antlers.

We are all gloriously insignificant. Non of us matter. There is 0 purpose. With no purpose and no significance, you are free. Free to determine your significance. Choose your existence. What is the existence you chose yourself to be. You can only do it once, so might as well do it, imo at least. Even pain is an experience to someone that has never experienced it.

but being a parent IS living fully and transforming in and of itself… i find that paradoxical. I would never have known my full self without having become a mother.

Why does “fully human” mean not bringing in social life?

I reject the idea that to be truly myself, I have to live a life filled with despair. I don’t think that is truly myself. I don’t think I’m avoiding anything when I appreciate the beauty of the tree outside of my window. I think the failure with this kind of nihilism is when one cannot truly give up the need for some sort of greater meaning. The tree stays beautiful and I don’t need it to be anything more

I think once you realize you’re not the only species trying to survive on this planet, from microscopic organisms to plants and animals, existence becomes a little less depressing and a lot more fascinating. Everything has an origin, and there’s so much to discover about how it all works. Even though humans and the systems we’ve created can make life unnecessarily difficult, everything else is way too interesting to ignore. I’ll gladly spend my 100 years learning something new because, honestly, existence itself is fascinating to me.

The human population on Earth has gone from 4 billion to 8.3 billion in my lifetime. I don't think there's a lack of procreation going on. Maybe in some regions, but not as a species all over the world.

How about not trying to rationalize humanity and enjoy the ride? Find what makes you happy and enjoy every day you have been blessed with. Love and be loved. We get one ride. The fact that we were even born is a miracle in itself.

The universe has no meaning because meaning is a human construct and the universe doesn’t exist for humans. I’m just glad to be here to witness it even if it’s mostly painful. I get to see things no one else has, or everyone has and I get to feel part of something. I get to live and that’s enough. I don’t understand why people need more than that. Life is suffering but it’s life, short or long. Pain is the cost of participation. As a paleontology autistic I also feel I must point out that the megaloceras (elk) didn’t grow too large of antlers to live, it grew large antlers and lived just fine until climate change created more forests and it couldn’t fit between the trees. It couldn’t adapt. And I feel that’s a more accurate metaphor for humanity. We must adapt away from past destructive behaviors or we will go extinct and take a lot of life along with us.

my take: we've never fit in the "modern world." the "modern world" is a construct created by humans to apply some sense, order, and hierarchy. a "modern world" humans can "fit in" is one the grows and evolves with and per the needs of society. we keep trying to make ourselves separate of other creatures on this planet - trying to be the biggest and the baddest - those are our antlers. our egos are out growing our sense and logic. the "modern world" is, has always been, and will always be a human construct which means we are the ones in control of it, not the other way around.

Life doesn't need to last forever to matter. It doesn't need to accomplish something to be worthwhile. And it doesn't need a purpose beyond itself to be worth experiencing. Why must existence be justified by anything beyond itself?
