@permitranger: Hiking Mt. Whitney without a permit isn't a loophole. It's skipping the line everyone else waits in. Thousands of hikers enter the lottery every year, plan their trips months in advance, and still don't get a permit. The permit system exists for a reason: to protect the mountain, limit overcrowding, and preserve the wilderness experience for everyone. And it's required year-round, day hikes included (recreation.gov). But some hikers simply ignore the rules and go anyway. So here's my question for those who've climbed Whitney without a permit: Why? Is the lottery system unfair? Are permits too difficult to get? Or do you simply believe you should be able to hike on public land without asking permission? I'm genuinely curious. And for everyone who follows the rules: Is the current permit system fair, or does it need to change? #mtwhitney #mountwhitney #inyonationalforest #wildernesspermit #permittips
Why should you ask for permission to hike on public land?

From my POV permit is necessary. Three Sister Falls has over 1k-5k hiking in a day. it is so packed and visual

there i typically a volunteer waiting right before the first lake. we got turned back for not having a proper food storage. at the time I was upset but truly understand and am happy there was someone there to enforce. 👏
