Behind Matthew Perry’s fame on Friends was a decades-long struggle that he described with painful honesty—and startling numbers. In his bestselling memoir, Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing, Perry estimated he spent around $9 million trying to get sober. He wrote that he attended rehab 15 times, went through detox 65 times and attended approximately 6,000 AA meetings. But the numbers only tell part of the story. Perry’s health crises included 14 major stomach surgeries after a severe colon rupture in 2018. Doctors reportedly gave him only a two percent chance of surviving that night. He spent two weeks in a coma and five months in the hospital. His struggles began early. Perry wrote that he started using Alc\*hol at 14. After a 1997 jet-ski accident left him with back pain, he developed a dependence on prescription medication. By the end of the third season of Friends, he recalled taking as many as 55 Vicodin pills a day. Perry D\*ed in October 2023 at age 54 after the acute effects of ketamine, with Dr\*wning listed as a secondary cause. The subsequent investigation led to five convictions connected to the supply of ketamine involved in his final days. Throughout his memoir, Perry described the enormous physical, emotional and financial cost of trying to recover. His story remains a reminder that fame and wealth cannot shield someone from a serious struggle. Behind all those numbers was a person who kept trying to find a way forward. Should celebrities speaking openly about addiction change how society views people struggling with recovery? \#MatthewPerry #Friends #CelebrityNews #AddictionAwareness #MentalHealthAwareness
