@drjannafond: Ever notice how your brain suddenly wants to solve every problem in your life the minute your head hits the pillow? The harder you try to force yourself to sleep, the more frustrating it can become. Cognitive shuffling is a simple technique that can help interrupt racing thoughts and make it easier to fall asleep. Here’s how to try it tonight: 1. Pick a neutral word with several different letters, like GARDEN. 2. Start with the first letter, G. Think of random objects that begin with G, like a guitar, a grape, a glass, or a goose. 3. Picture each object in your mind for a few seconds. Try to actually visualize its shape, color, or appearance rather than just saying the word to yourself. 4. When you can’t think of any more objects, move to the next letter. For A, you might picture an apple, an airplane, or an alligator. 5. Continue through the letters at a relaxed pace. If you get stuck, just move on. There’s no need to finish the word. Why might this work? When you’re worrying, replaying conversations, or mentally preparing for tomorrow, your brain stays engaged in a continuous train of thought. Cognitive shuffling interrupts that process by introducing random, disconnected images that don’t require planning or problem-solving. A few extra tips: Choose neutral, everyday objects rather than anything emotionally upsetting. Don’t connect the images into a story. And if your mind wanders back to your worries, simply return to the next image. Remember, the goal isn’t to force yourself to fall asleep. It’s to stop giving your brain problems to solve and allow sleep to happen naturally. Save this for the next night your brain won’t shut off. 😴 #CognitiveShuffling #SleepTips #RacingThoughts #SleepAnxiety #relationshipadvice
