There has NEVER been a recorded case of airborne nut allergy reaction on a plane. NEVER.

and honestly why the fuck are we doing nuts on an airplane anyway. There’s plenty of those cookie packets and pretzels and things it’s so unnecessary

I just don’t understand why people value eating something over someone’s life when they go without it for like max 24 hours at the longest flight or whatever. Why do you value that over someone’s literal life

Yes thats a problem with allergies. You can’t control how your body will react. And if they said they could accommodate then they should have accommodated. Some people could die just smelling the thing they’re allergic to

we should be taking allergies way more seriously than we are. being able to die within minutes to something that others could just have on them randomly must be incredibly draining...

How did people survive in the recent past when peanuts were served on every single flight? Thousands of people must’ve died every year on airplanes.

We can’t like just not accommodate a very common illness like that. There are a billion other things you can give as a snack on a plane. It’s really unfair to expect someone with that allergy to never get on a plane. Sometimes people have to.

Does she have a documented severe allergy or only her perceived allergy?

“Do you have severe allergies?” Yes “Unfortunately we will no longer be able to accommodate you on this airline unless you sign this waiver” Problem solved.

In an extensive medical review commissioned by the UK's Civil Aviation Authority and published by allergy and aviation medicine specialists, researchers evaluated decades of flight data. They concluded that there is no evidence supporting the belief that nut allergens can spread through aircraft ventilation systems. Modern commercial aircraft ventilation systems are designed to cycle and filter air rapidly across the cabin cross-section rather than down the length of the aisle, causing any localized dust from shelling nuts to settle out of the air almost immediately. The leading patient organization Allergy & Anaphylaxis Australia actively educates travelers that aerosolization of nut allergens from other passengers opening or eating nuts has not been shown to cause anaphylaxis, even in small, closed-in spaces like a plane cabin. They emphasize that the primary risk in flight is surface cross-contamination (touching a tray table or armrest with residue and then touching your mouth or nose) rather than breathing the cabin air. The American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology (AAAAI) notes that while they do not maintain a singular, rigid position paper on airline travel, their clinical experts consistently affirm that inhalation exposures to peanut and tree nut products are highly unlikely to trigger systemic or anaphylactic allergic reactions. The AAAAI maintains that oral ingestion is overwhelmingly required to trigger a severe systemic response, and that true aerosolization of nut proteins does not readily happen just from eating or opening packages nearby.

On a flight from Ireland to England they wouldn't serve/offer (you had to buy) anything with nuts cause someone had a severe allergy

It cant be airborne because it doesn't hold enough protein to aerosolize, but it can still cause mild reactions it just cant cause death like anaphylaxis shock. but it surface contact can, like if theres residue on a table top or a seat belt. so no it cant get to someone in the air just by being there, unless someone on the plane was actively crushing the nuts causing it to dust, in that case it is very plausible since dust does travel.

Soooo many business wanna say they can accommodate severe allergies but can’t or won’t allocate the physical space necessary to do so. I dealt with this a lot in managing restaurants but it makes sense airplanes have the same problem

Ingestion and Direct Contact: Severe, life-threatening reactions (anaphylaxis) require actually eating the nut proteins, getting them into the mouth or eyes, or having direct skin contact with a substantial amount. Source : Cleveland Clinic Simply smelling nuts or sitting next to someone eating a peanut butter sandwich does not trigger a systemic allergic reaction or death. While the smell can sometimes cause mild irritation, anxiety, or hay-fever-like symptoms (due to the body's psychological response), it will not cause your throat to close or your blood pressure to drop. Source :Karolinska institutet Proteins trigger allergies: Allergic reactions happen when your immune system reacts to specific proteins in food, releasing histamines and other chemicals. Source : Food Institute of Canada Grinding or crushing: While a simple smell is harmless, breathing in actual microscopic nut particles or dust—such as when nuts are actively being ground, crushed, or processed—can carry proteins into the air and cause mild symptoms like sneezing or itchy eyes but nuts as a whole being eaten around you cannot cause an allergic reaction.
